Tutoring

Our free K–5 tutoring covers reading and math with the goal of improving comprehension with hands-on active learning activities. The tutoring is offered through the federal work-study program, with our education students as the tutors. Students participate in tutoring once a week at scheduled times. This is especially valuable for homeschool parents looking for help in a particular subject area. The parents are given suggestions on what they can work on further with their children, along with items in the collection that could aid them in their studies.

This program is advertised by word of mouth, in our library, and on our webpage. Since many of our adult students are parents, this method of advertising works well. We also send information out to homeschool contacts, public libraries, and local school districts, asking to pass on the information to those who need this service. We ask the parents to describe the area where their child needs the most help. If possible, we ask the child to bring an example of a worksheet or classwork that shows the problem they are having. Since this is a tightly focused tutoring program, it is better for our tutors to know what the concern is from the beginning. Our tutors are already involved in teaching classes and are visiting classrooms in the area. This is an opportunity for them to learn firsthand how to work with children of different needs and abilities before they get into a classroom; to implement the techniques they have learned in the classroom; and to determine the aspect of education for which they are best suited.
